Through the Wounds, We See the Healer
Trauma is when something very upsetting or frightening happens, and it leaves a lasting mark on how you feel, think, or cope with life. It’s not just the event itself—it’s the way it continues to affect you afterwards, sometimes making you feel unsafe or overwhelmed even long after it’s over.
Think of it like a wound: if you cut your skin, the injury might heal with care, but it can leave a scar. Trauma is like an emotional wound—it needs gentle attention and support to heal, and while it may leave a mark, healing is always possible.
When people experience trauma, it can distort the way they see God. Instead of learning who He truly is, they may interpret Him through the lens of their pain. The wound of trauma can whisper lies that God caused the evil or abandoned them in it. For many, their faith becomes framed by that wound, and some even lose sight of God altogether.
Yet Jesus understands trauma. He chose to step into it for us. He bore humiliation, betrayal, abandonment, nakedness, loneliness, darkness, the silence of God, helplessness, shame, grief, and the loss of everything, even His life. He carried the deepest wounds so that ours could be healed.
And in the midst of our pain, God’s heart is full of compassion: “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Psalm 34:18).
May the risen Christ, who bore every wound and carried every sorrow, breathe new life into your heart this Easter. May His compassion draw you close, His peace steady your steps, and His victory over death remind you that no trauma, no darkness, and no loss has the final word. The cross speaks of suffering, but the empty tomb proclaims healing, renewal, and everlasting hope.

Finding Calm in the Festive Rush

A Pastoral Reflection on Stress, Strength and Seasonal Hope
As the year draws to a close, many people speak of the festive season with a sparkle in their eyes, yet the truth is that this time can feel overwhelming even for the most resilient among us. The rush to finish projects, the pressure to create memorable family moments, and the quiet emotional weight we carry from the months behind us can settle heavily on our shoulders. In pastoral conversations, I often hear how stress creeps in unnoticed and slowly begins to affect the way people speak, behave, and rest. When we understand the subtle signs, we can care for ourselves and one another with greater compassion.
Stress rarely announces itself politely. Instead, it slips into everyday interactions. Someone who is normally patient might suddenly snap at a small frustration, leaving them confused about their own behaviour. Children, too, express their tension through irritability or quick tempers, because they don’t always have words for their big feelings. You may notice a friend withdrawing from social spaces, avoiding outings they would usually enjoy, or behaving out of character. Others struggle with disrupted sleep — waking exhausted, oversleeping, or wrestling with wakefulness in the early hours. Responsibilities may start slipping, not because of carelessness, but because the mind is simply too stretched to hold everything in place. And for many people, stress takes up space at the table, influencing appetite either through overindulgence or a disinterest in food altogether.
These patterns do not mean that someone is failing; they simply reveal that life has been demanding. Stress, after all, is part of being human. Yet the festive season provides a gentle opportunity to regain steadiness, to seek wholeness, and to centre ourselves in God’s grace once more. Healthy habits are not luxuries reserved for calmer days; they are vital companions on the journey towards strength and restoration.
A good night’s sleep remains one of the most powerful foundations for emotional resilience. Establishing an evening routine that quietens the mind — including reducing screen-time and keeping devices out of the bedroom — can make a surprisingly significant difference. Our bodies also long for movement, whether it is a brisk walk in the morning, a relaxed stretch in the living room or a playful game in the garden. Physical activity helps release tension and restores a sense of balance that serves us well through the busyness.
There is also great value in talking things through with someone who can listen without judgment. Naming stress often breaks the power it holds. If family dynamics feel too complicated, this might be the right time to reach out for counselling, giving yourself a safe space to breathe and reflect. Alongside this, it is vital to protect moments of joy and quiet. Some people feel energised by a full diary, while others are replenished by slow, unhurried hours. Children especially benefit from time to play freely, create, imagine or simply rest. The gift lies in discovering what genuinely nurtures your spirit and intentionally making space for it.
This season invites us to look out for one another with a gentler eye. When we notice signs of strain in ourselves or those around us, we can respond with grace rather than frustration. By sharing healthy practices and encouraging steady rhythms, we help create a community where no one has to navigate stress alone.
If you find that the weight of the year feels too heavy, please remember that help is close at hand. Our doors remain open during the festive season, and you are welcome to reach out for support, whether for a conversation, counselling or guidance. You do not have to carry everything by yourself. Let this be a time of renewed hope, restored peace and a sense of well-being as we step into the year ahead.

3 Practical Ways to Support Someone Facing Bullying
Bullying can leave people feeling isolated, powerless, and deeply hurt. Whether it's happening at school, work, or online, those targeted often struggle to find a way out. As a friend, colleague, or concerned individual, your support can make all the difference. Here are the first three practical and proven ways to help someone who is being bullied:
- Listen Without Judgment
Before jumping into solutions, offer a safe space for the person to express what they’re going through. Be patient, empathetic, and validate their feelings. Often, people experiencing bullying just need to be heard before they can consider what steps to take next.
- Support Them in Reporting the Bullying
Reporting bullying can feel intimidating, but having a trusted person alongside can provide courage. Offer to help them prepare what they want to say, accompany them when speaking to the appropriate authority, or assist with writing emails or letters that clearly outline the situation.
- Promote Building a Support Network
Encourage the individual to connect with others who can provide emotional support. This might include trusted friends, family, or professional counsellors. Being part of a positive and affirming community can help counter the negative effects of bullying.
By taking these steps, you can offer meaningful support to someone facing bullying. Your presence, encouragement, and guidance can empower them to regain their sense of safety and self-worth.
To deepen your understanding and gain practical tools for addressing bullying effectively, consider joining Aquilla Training's online workshop Stopping the Bully. This self-paced, 4 to 5-hour workshop is designed to raise awareness, provide accurate information about the issue, and equip participants with practical strategies and resources. Together, we can create safer, more supportive environments.

Staying Committed to Your Vision: The Power of Persistence and Celebration
Achieving meaningful goals often requires more than just ambition—it demands vision, perseverance, and the ability to celebrate milestones along the way. Whether you're pursuing a personal dream, professional success, or a long-term project, these three key principles can help you stay motivated and resilient:
- Cultivate a Clear Vision
Success begins with clarity. A well-defined vision gives you direction and purpose, helping you stay focused even when obstacles arise. Write down your goals, visualize your desired outcome, and remind yourself regularly why you started this journey in the first place.
- Embrace Commitment (Stickability)
Commitment is the driving force that keeps you moving forward when progress feels slow or setbacks occur. Developing 'stickability'—the ability to stay the course despite challenges—is essential. Break your goals into manageable steps, celebrate small wins, and remind yourself that persistence is often what separates success from failure.
- Celebrate Milestones to Fuel Momentum
Success isn't just about reaching the final destination; it's about recognizing and celebrating progress along the way. Marking achievements—big or small—re-energizes your motivation and builds confidence for the next steps. Whether you celebrate privately, with friends, or by rewarding yourself with something meaningful, these moments of recognition keep you inspired to continue.
We are celebrating several milestones that reflect our commitment to vision and perseverance:
- Inter Trauma Nexus is marking 26 years of dedicated service.
- Our daily motivational letter, 'Friends of Inter Trauma Nexus' and “Vriende van Inter Trauma Nexus", have reached an incredible 1,810 editions each.
- Shaped by the Storm, authored by Dr. Barbara Louw, is now the 11th book we've been involved in publishing.
By combining vision, persistence, and intentional celebration, you create a powerful cycle that fuels lasting success. Remember, every step forward—even the smallest one—is a victory worth acknowledging.

When chaos strikes, trauma responders step in. Crisis counsellors, pastoral workers, emergency personnel—they are the frontline of hope. Every family has a “fixer,” the one who holds things together when life shatters. They are the quiet heroes, the glue of society.
They don’t waste time pointing fingers. They don’t ask, Why did this happen? They ask, How can I help? Their kindness is a lifeline for the broken, the lost, the weary.
They don’t measure the cost of compassion. They give, even when it hurts. No one expects tragedy to knock on their door—until it does. Witnessing pain leaves scars, but this is not punishment. This is love in action. This is life.

Bullying is a pervasive issue that affects individuals across all age groups. Despite its harmful impact, many myths still cloud our understanding of what bullying truly is. By debunking these misconceptions, we can foster safer, more compassionate environments for everyone. Let’s explore some common myths and the facts that challenge them.
Myth 1: Bullying Is a Natural Part of Childhood Many believe that bullying is simply part of growing up. However, aggression—whether physical or emotional—is not natural. No one should endure harm as a rite of passage.
Myth 2: Words Can’t Hurt You The adage "sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me" couldn't be more misleading. Verbal bullying can leave emotional scars that last a lifetime.
Myth 3: Only Boys Bully While boys may engage in more physical bullying, girls often use verbal and emotional tactics, particularly during adolescence.
Myth 4: Ignoring Bullying Makes It Stop Silence often empowers the bully. Addressing the issue with adult support is crucial.
Myth 5: Cyberbullying Is Less Harmful The anonymity and wide reach of cyberbullying can cause significant, long-lasting damage.
Unfortunately, negative behaviour such as bullying exists in our community. By enhancing people’s ability to feel good about themselves there is a possibility to facilitate a process of being able to change behaviour that has negative consequences. However, changing behaviour is not enough. Bullying isn’t a phase—it’s a societal issue that requires our collective effort to stop. Let's replace myths with understanding and empower individuals to stand against bullying with confidence and compassion.
Aquilla Training offers an online workshop Stopping the Bully: Strategies for Creating Safe Environments. In this 5-hour workshop, we use a wholistic approach by looking at bullying from a wider perspective than just a behavioural problem. We see bullying as a fruit of a larger problem in society. The community is influenced by what happens to individuals at the hands of other individuals because the effects of bullying are not limited to the targeted victim, the bully and the bystander.
This workshop is not just a theoretical tactic but a solution-focused approach to addressing bullying. We attempt to widen participants' understanding of the problem-saturated situation and create the possibility for positive and healing dialogues in the various communities.
Online Workshop Duration: 4 to 5-hour online course. Self-paced (You can start at any time).

Beyond Words: The Therapeutic Power of Art and Play in Wellness and Recovery.
Art encompasses various human activities, including creating visual, auditory, or performing items. These activities express the artist's imaginative and conceptual ideas or technical skills, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. Through art, individuals can communicate complex emotions and thoughts, fostering a deeper connection with themselves and others.
Play consists of activities performed for self-amusement that offer behavioural, social, and psychomotor rewards. These rewards come from within the individual, making play an enjoyable and spontaneous experience. Play encourages creativity, problem-solving, and social interaction, contributing to well-being and personal growth.
In this course, we will explore various forms of handicraft, folk art, and cultural practices as tools for self-expression and creativity. These activities lead to wholeness, learning, and wholesome pleasure, enriching our lives in meaningful ways. By distinguishing between normal human activities and therapeutic practices, we aim to provide a clear understanding of how art and play can be integrated into daily life for both enjoyment and healing.
