Counselling Skills Workshops – All the detail as requested

A number of colleagues requested training detail in a simple document.

  • Introductions

Aquilla Training is a joint venture between diverse professional entities. We are working together present skills workshops, because we are passionate about sharing skills and knowledge. Partner organisations are Inter Trauma Nexus, Aquilla Financial Solutions, Aquilla Wellness Solutions and Kailo Institute.

The project leaders and main facilitators are Dr Barbara Louw and Rev Wynand Louw.

  • We offer training presented by experienced and knowledgeable facilitators and mentors

Counsellors want to construct their own ideas and concepts that serve as platforms for them to understand their lives, increase insight, solve problems and be creative. They want to know why they are learning. They need the skills to apply their knowledge and experience.

The counselling skills we train are practical and will enhance your ability and sensitivity to help people.

Bitterness, Revenge and Resiliency

Counsellors and pastors are challenged by people declaring their bitterness and the need for revenge, especially in our South African context, where people have “the urge to fight back” and “set the record straight”. In this workshop, the metaphor of a tree planted next to living waters will be placed in contrast to the limiting belief in a “just” world. Bitterness and revenge are explained as destructive coping strategies, which can be mitigated with resiliency and wisdom. (4 CPD points CPSC)

Cultural Diversity and Sensitive Support

Communities in Africa are unique and face distinctive challenges. An efficient counselling approach need to be culturally sensitive and acknowledge cultural diversity. A wholistic counselling and EAP approach recognises the importance of utilizing culture in a meaningful therapeutic method. The culturally diverse communities that we are working in does not lend itself to a one-size fits all approach. (5 CPTD points SACE)

Wholistic Wellness Model for Counsellors

This model was developed as part of Dr Barbara Louw’s PhD studies and is one of the most practical and popular session on our agenda.

The purpose of this workshop is to assist counsellors and pastors to become aware of the impact of posttraumatic experiences and to facilitate the implementations of a wholistic wellness model to enhance posttraumatic growth.

The wellness model is a multi-systems approach to enhance wellness and wholeness. Special attention will be given to the spiritual brokenness of our community and the manifestation of pain. (4 CPD points CPSC)

Emotional First Aid for Trauma Responders

Emotional First Aid for trauma responders, pastors and counsellors helps normal, healthy people to bounce back from the shock and stress of abnormal events faster and more completely. They will be able to identify more serious problems and get help before it becomes an issue. Most responders are aware of the traumatic responses of the people they help, but neglect to take care of their own wellbeing.

Pastors, managers, educators and counsellors are often overwhelmed by their excessive workload, the needs of the people they serve, involvement in traumatic or troubling situations and the lack of control over the tasks they need to perform.

In this workshop, participants will be encouraged to look at their personal and occupational stress in a new way, and take action to stay well at work and in ministry. (4 CPD points CPSC)
